Keeping all of the Swift Team vehicles in proper working order is not a job to be taken lightly. Employed, full-time by Swift Racing, as the Team’s in-house mechanic, Jan Verschoor is responsible for the enormous task of rebuilding and maintaining all race and support vehicles. Jan’s duties however are not limited to the garage. Traveling to each and every race, Jan preps the vehicles and is always on hand to make any mid-race emergency repairs or modifications that may be needed. While Jan may spend most of his time wrenching, he also plays an integral role as the Team’s key Co-Driver, coaching the driver to the finish line.
Finding someone with Jan’s technical expertise and meticulous attention to detail is not easy. In fact, it took a10-year process to fully bring Jan onboard the Swift Team. Originally from Holland, Jan first met the Swifts at the 1989 Baja 1000 when the team claimed victory in a Class 7 4x4 Ranger. Jan left Baja that year, returning to his home in Holland and continued to stay in touch with the Swift Team. After 10 years of jumping through many legal hoops, Jan and his wife Maria finally made there way to the U.S. as legal citizens, to work full-time for the Swift Team. Jan and Maria now live and work at the Swift Race Shop, where Maria works as an author of Christian books.
As if Jan’s story isn’t interesting enough already —there’s more. Jan Vershoor is an adventurer of the highest caliber. After attending college in Holland as a Mechanical Engineer, Jan worked as a long-haul truck driver in the Middle East. His first experience off-roading was in the Dakar Rally, and if that’s not enough for you, Jan has climbed some of the most treacherous mountains in the world, once hiking through the Himalayas, from Nepal to Tibet. Now that he and his wife, Maria are living in the U.S. Jan still finds time to explore the rest of the world as an on-call mechanic for Holland’s Military vehicles. They send him to the far reaches of the globe to repair their Land Rovers, trucks and other vehicles that require a certain amount of expertise.
